Traveling Down the Road of Travel Insurance

Your dream vacation of a lifetime is fast approaching. You have invested financial resources and inordinate amounts of time in planning and scheduling your trip. You find that your waking free moments whisk you away on an invisible cloud to your travel destination and you imagine the perfect unfolding of that day and the vacation.

You are ready to go, but are you really? What if nature doesn’t cooperate or what if there is a sudden and unavoidable illness in your family? These and other life happenings can cause a major detour in your vacation plans.

Therefore, it is a good idea to consider travel insurance. When considering travel insurance it is wise to understand the three common types of insurance available and make sure you read the find print.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance is a common form of travel insurance. Purchase of this insurance allows for you to recoup your money if you become sick or if your travel arrangements become disrupted due to an illness or death in your family. The timing for this payout covers the time period prior to the trip being taken. Other misfortunes that may allow for a payout of travel insurance may be listed as well.

In addition your policy may be written in that a portion of your vacation may be refunded. If so, this refund generally occurs if a member of the vacationing family becomes ill and the trip needs to be cut short.

Other medically related travel insurance coverage may include emergency treatment while vacationing. This insurance will cover medical expenses for illnesses contracted while on vacation.

Baggage Insurance

Baggage insurance is a travel insurance that provides coverage of your luggage and personal belongings in the event of loss or damage while traveling. It may also be prudent to inquire about any protection that may be offered by the travel carrier or tour company.

Accidental Death

Accidental death as part of your travel insurance plans is pretty straightforward. This insurance covers you or a family member in the event of an accidental death while traveling.

Read the Fine Print

Not all travel insurance policies are the same. Therefore, it is important to read the fine print and understand what the policy will cover and not cover. Many disclaimers may be written into the policy.

Specific areas of coverage that call for close scrutiny are the limits of coverage. If part of your traveling items include expensive technology (computers, cameras), jewelry, clothing, etc., it is important that the limits of your policy meet the value of your belongings.

Additionally, we live in a dangerous world. Elements of that danger include acts of terror, tsunamis and earthquakes to name a few. Often, in travel insurance policies, these specific events are not insurable.
